| Book Review | Ernest Shackleton was the closest to getting his crew to the Sought Pole in 1909, which at the time he reached 97 miles away. But then the Amundsen expedition became the first the reach the South Pole in 1912. So Shackleton needed a new record to beat. He decided he wanted to be the first person to walk across Antarctica while passing through the South Pole to the other end. I enjoyed the historical details of the book, but I wish it was a little longer and explained certain things that the crew did that I wasn't familiar with. For example, the book shows the crew bombing their ship and let it sink (Once they reach the other end, a second ship would pick them up.) Was this to prevent future expeditions taking their loot so they don't have an advantage? Or could it be to prevent other crews from seeing their ship which could help them find a "decent" path across Antartica? I think I'll have to Google it. |
