TitleHiroshima Maidens:  a story of courage, compassion, and survival
Author Rodney Barker
Call Number D767.25.H6 B37 1986
Location 2nd Floor Humanities
Rating Highly Recommended
Book Review Hiroshima Maidens is a close look at the effects of nuclear warfare and the stigma of surviving such an instance. Following the journeys of several Hiroshima maidens seeking plastic surgery to relive them of their injuries caused by the atomic bomb, the book follows the fundraising efforts for their surgeries and what the process looked like for the maidens. I appreciated that Barker treated the women covered in the book as humans and didn't seek to paint them as victims, rather as women he encountered when his family hosted one. It's a quick and well-done look at one moment in history.
