| Book Review | This title introduces readers to the often eccentric, sometimes dramatic people behind well-known museums, and expands upon their major contributions to the field. I originally picked this book up to continue my study of early American culture/amusements (another good read in junction with this title is 'With amusement for all: a history of American popular culture since 1830'), and I really liked how each chapter was devoted to a different museum official, culminating in a final chapter summarizing the work of Paul Joseph Sachs, who seemed to have instructed and/or known all of the museum greats previously studied throughout the book. It was exceedingly fascinating to read about the growth of MoMA, the Met, historic preservation sites, history museums, etc. (including museums I've actually visited!). This book has inspired me to continue pursuing museum studies. |
