| Book Review | Toy Story meets Edward Gorey in this old-timey macabre graphic novel replete with unexpected Victorian-era jargon and slapstick morbidity. If you're a fan of Through the Woods (Emily Carroll) or the animated miniseries Over the Garden Wall, you may enjoy this romp of absurdity with a sock monkey from New York embarking on adventures alongside a rag doll crow. Instead of a cohesive, sequential journey, most of these illustrated escapades careen into abrupt, sinister endings, and then restart afresh as though you haven't just witnessed an entire home devoured by flames. With just a handful of twisted episodes to devour, this one can be enjoyed in a single sitting, preferably with a glass of Armagnac. Monocle optional. |
