| Book Review | Amelia's illustrated notebook tale is reminiscent of Huell Howser-style summer vacations of yesteryear--I can relate to enduring siblings on long car rides, begging to stop at oddball tourist trap sideshows, and usually finding something ridiculous to delight over or document. From sketches of weird landmarks and scrawled out postcards, to souvenir sugar packets taped into margins, Amelia's adventure notes are not unlike the travel diaries I kept during childhood trips to mountains, deserts, monuments, and creepy campsites where I supervised my brother's tent construction with great disdain while looking for cool bugs. Amelia reminds me to be forever young, to keep looking for cool bugs, to make journeys out of mundane commutes, and to archive unexpected objects, sights, and stories along the way. |
