When
Oprah Winfrey mentioned that she played the lead role in the movie version of
this story, I decided to read the book first. I never knew how cruelly the
slaves were treated during the Civil War and the years afterwards. This books
shows the how guilt and pain can weigh one down but perseverance,
determination and community support can pull a person through. Now I know why
they say: It takes a village to raise a child.
