Boyle's novel, inspired by a true story, is about the relationships between a
Vietnam vet, his mentally ill 25 year-old son Adam, and Adam's new lover
Sarah, a right-wing anarchist. The chapters are alternately told by the three
main characters, and the level of mental dysfunction in Sarah and Adam's
chapters was uncomfortable to experience as a reader. The book has many tense
moments and is well-written, using powerful imagery and varied sentence
  structure for each character. |
