The
graphic novel format is perfect for conveying the author's story of how it
feels to be an Asian growing up in the U.S. The illustrations aptly and
humorously capture the awkward teenage years of just wanting to fit in.
Yang creatively intertwines traditional Asian stereotypes and the
Monkey King's story with his own.
