Book ReviewLisa See informs her readers of historical events while winding stories around interesting characters based on anecdotes from people who lived through the Chinese-American nightclub era. China Dolls follows three Asian American girls who want to perform. Their talents or lack of translates to escape from domestic abuse, being less than in a dictatorial household, and poverty. They struggle for money, family acceptance, love and meaningful relationships throughout this story. See takes her reader to Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco, Norfolk, Honolulu and many more cities as the three women negotiate housing, touring schedules, war rationing, discrimination, and internment.
