Every field or industry has their nomenclature and
terminology and the rare book trade is no different. I needed to read this for
professional development, as I attended the Rare Book School at the University
of Virginia recently. (Summer camp for book nerds.) I did not have a rare
monographs background and this book, a dictionary of terms used by related
professionals was very necessary. It includes terms for every physical component
of a book (leaves, endpaper, boards) and rare manuscript material (broadsheet,
broadside, ephemera). Special collections and archives, one of which I manage,
occasionally acquire items from antiquarian and rare book dealers and this
glossary is necessary when communicating with them. Would only recommend if
you're interested in the minutiae of this very specific world. |
