Book ReviewThe title may sound like a diet book, but this is actually outstanding science writing that has influenced my daily life. Pontzer, a professor of evolutionary anthropology and global health at Duke, presents research that challenges the traditional "calories in, calories out" model. Using studies across diverse populations and activity levels, he introduces the “constrained model” of energy expenditure, showing that our bodies operate on a fixed energy budget; we burn about the same number of calories regardless of activity level by adjusting internal energy use. Blending anthropology, cell biology, and health science, the book offers a compelling and eye-opening look at how our bodies manage energy. As someone interested in health and running, I found it both informative and fascinating.
