| Book Review | I read this in parallel with "Howards End." "The Remains of the Day" is the story of the quintessential, terminally restrained English butler, serving in the final days of England's great houses and elite families. He lives through war and immense societal upheaval, but always as an observer, rather than a participant. He eventually realizes that he has sacrificed his own life on the altar of duty. But is it too late? |
