| Book Review | One of the first and most complete histories of clay animation, chronicling its evolution from early trick films to Gumby to Will Vinton's trademarked term Claymation to Pee-Wee's Playhouse. Written in 1993, just before Tim Burton's 'Nightmare Before Christmas' was released theatrically, this book is dated in certain respects, though its emphasis on the medium's early history and the innovators who worked in clay make it worth the read. Frierson spends much of the book doing shot-by-shot breakdowns of clay films, some of them only available in the Library of Congress. An interesting read for those interested in early animation history and the specialization of clay animation. |
