This
is the first in the Series of Unfortunate Events books. It is unusual for a
young readers book (at least for me) in that it makes no bones about the fact
that the orphan protagonists are not going to have a happy ending. At least
not yet. That being said, the narrator has an engaging style that turns a
dark tale into a humorous page turner. I didn't expect to like the book as
much as I did and look forward to picking up the next one. And a bonus
discovery: the audiobooks are read by Tim Curry!

I
loved this book!! Another magical adventure that I somehow missed during my
own childhood, The BFG is an exciting tale following curious, kind people
(and a Friendly Giant, of course.) I'm not sure which I liked better - the
BFG blowing good dreams into the bedrooms of kids across the world, or the
morning tea with the Queen of England. I'm going to have to pick up copy of
my own!

D'APrix
Sweeney has written an interesting read in developing characters. They are
each faulty and aware of their faults, and areset up against an easy
antagonist of supposed inheritance. However, the biggest character
developments seem to take place in other rooms, or have just happened in a
sequence that the reader is only somewhat privy too as an after effect
of it happening - while you're in the room for some of the more mundane
frustrations. Still compelling and interesting to read through, but a one
time only read for me.

I
love this book. Like LOOOOVE! It's the most bizarre, colorful
story about Celia & Marco in a magical competition. The vivid
descriptions make you feel like you are walking through this magical illusion
of a circus. I couldn't put it down. Also - I really want to go
to this place!!!

This
book hit pretty close to home for me actually. Erica writes in a witty
manner about the getting older, death and her grown daughter. Watching
your parents pass (my grandparents for me) and questioning your mortality is
an issue I don't think a lot of folks like to discuss. This book is filled
with humor and heart warming realizations. Loved it!
