Told
from the perspective of their daughter Hazel many years after the fact, Saga
is the story of the (almost literally) star-crossed lovers Alana and Marko,
who come from opposite sides of a sprawling war in space. There is so
much insanity in this series: Alana's species has wings and Marko's has
horns; other characters include spider-women, ghosts of people who have been
sawed in half, large hairless cats who can detect lies, and sentient robot
beings with monitors for heads; and there's a spaceship made from a tree.
While star-crossed lovers on the run are nothing new, Saga shines in
its worldbuilding and execution, which isn't afraid to be as gritty (both
sexually and in terms of violence) as it is colorful and imaginative.
