Book Review | An enlightening story based on the idea that publications by Shakespeare were written by a woman, named Emilia Bassano, the first accounting of a female published author for her book of poetry in 1600s. The story travels back and forth from Emilia the character in the Elizabethan era and then to present day NY where Emilia's relative, Melina is a struggling play write. Picoult's extensive research weaves in many possible sonnets, plays, and poems published in Shakespeare's name but not written by him. The life of Shakespeare is well documented, but his brand is Teflon, and it is very tough to penetrate. I was impressed with the author's body of evidence to support her claims and began to thoroughly doubt Shakespeare's true identity by the end of the novel. I enjoyed the novel and love the fire and energy Jodi Picoult's novels radiate. |
