This
is the 5th book into The Forsyte Saga and revolves around Soames
Forsyte and his family which came from Devon. The comedic series of
well-written novels covers the early 1900's England through 1935, and
illustrates the dos and don'ts of high and low society, how wealth is
won and lost, and how problems of the wealthy and well connected are
solved or not. The Silver Spoon pokes fun at the wealthy and the
privileged set. A large section of the novel revolves around a court
case for defamation between a wealthy social lite, Fleur, and an actress
and a magazine writer, Marjorie attempting to raise her situation by
marrying a titled member of Parliament. The case hinged on shared
written words and public comments made against each other during a
social gathering. The defaming terms included: immoral, traitress, and
snake vs Lion-huntress and snob. It did not go well for either party -
and both were grasping to their society
position by refusing to a mutual apology. The Chronicles and the author,
Galsworthy received The Nobel Prize in 1932 for the saga, and the
author died in 1933. |
