To control population, Scythes now "glean" a certain number of individuals per year. Our main characters are apprentice Scythes who are navigating their new powers and realizing the price of immortality on humankind. I was surprised by how much I liked this book and how thought provoking it was on themes of power, corruption, artificial intelligence, responsibility, and mortality.
