Book Review | This work traces the influence of early modern writers (particularly Shakespeare and Donne) on T.S. Eliot’s poetry and plays from his school years through the 1950s. It discusses the impact of early modern literature on Eliot’s form and content, as well as the way Eliot continued to build on his own work to continue the thread from Stoicism through the Elizabethan and Enlightenment ages to bridge the connection to more modern writers who have built on Eliot’s works in turn. It also pays particular attention to the ways his borrowing from earlier literature changed upon his own religious conversion. Though the author provides lots of block quotes from both Eliot and the early modern writers to illustrate his points, it’s still very helpful to have good familiarity with Eliot’s work before picking up this text. |
