Book Review | This classic tale takes you back in time after the first World War and with WWII looming. Captain Ryder is Mr. Waugh's melancholy narrator, although not a member of the family, is encouraged to spend more and more time during school holidays from Oxford. Love, lust, aging, religion, vice, wealth and class and privilege are significant in how each complicated character handles daily life and events. I liked how the author seemed to make Captain Ryder peer and hover over family scenes as he narrates. I have only watched parts of this classic BBC series and wanted to read it before watching it again straight through. |
